Peter Hewitt’s career has spanned health, culture, local government and the voluntary sector. 

He began his career in 1976 with Inter-Action, the pioneering Kentish Town based community/development organisation. From there he moved to local government in the north east of England, with North Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council. 

Peter then moved to Northern Arts, the region’s cultural development agency where he played a key part in helping to realise the Angel of the North, the Baltic Art Gallery and other major developments. He then moved into health as Tees Health Authority’s Corporate Affairs Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, communications, human resources and primary care development. 

Peter was Chief Executive of Arts Council England from 1998 to 2008, where he oversaw a £1bn Lottery funded national capital strategy and whilst there he played a leading part in producing ‘A Prospectus for Arts and Health’ with the Department of Health. He was awarded a CBE for services to the arts in 2008. 

Peter joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity in June 2009.
